I think it was about a month ago, or so, that I noticed there’s a Boon Tong Kee outlet at Sengkang’s CompassOne (interesting how I thought we’ll never be able to switch from saying CompassPoint to CompassOne but here we are now…) and I finally got to make a purchase here, albeit for a takeaway. Just about everyone thought that the counter at the front (where you see the lady looking through the menu) was where you can place your takeaway order. BUT the takeaway counter is actually within the restaurant. So walk a few steps into the place and place your order at the NEXT counter. I don’t know why this Boon Tong Kee outlet doesn’t just have a prominent sign placed on the counter to state that the takeaway booth is within. So customers don’t end up queuing in the wrong line. And staff don’t have to keep repeating the same instructions when customers ask if they can place their takeaway order right here. (@_@)
Anyway, unless you want a fancy meal, there is no need to pick up the menu. There is a smaller laminated sheet at the counter for takeaways where you can select from a few items. I picked the Chicken Drumstick Rice set ($7.50) and added a Braised Egg ($1). GST came up to 60 cents so my final bill was $9.10.
And here it is on my desk at home:
The disposable cutlery set looks good. Even comes with a toothpick. Atas much. And the sauces in individual sachets. I opened only the chili and the yellowish one which I assumed to be ginger (it has the consistency of some kind of jam – I don’t like it).
Inside, there is a surprise. A meatball, which I take to be chicken meatball. I’m not sure if this place is halal-certified, but this meatball certainly doesn’t taste like pork. Love the chili sauce, adore the pickled vegetables, thought the egg is so-so only, but found the chicken delicious.
The rice was, strangely, a letdown. Tasted too much like regular rice, and not chicken rice, if you know what I mean. Kind of dry too. I should have ordered some soup, maybe. And I thought it’d be really good to either (1) have the chicken deboned so the splinted pieces of bone aren’t everywhere or (2) have the chicken drumstick served whole instead of chopped up.
As I get older, somehow I get fussier about the chicken I eat. Haha! I don’t remember being concerned about messy pieces of bone in my food when I was in my 20s. Strange ah?!
At Hawker Chan previously, I’d requested (or rather, the ordering kiosk had this selection) for my chicken drumstick to be kept whole. And THAT was way more enjoyable. Well, it’s a good thing to finally be clear about my food preferences.
And if you want to head down to Boon Tong Kee for a meal, or tabao some yummy chicken for your Reunion Dinner, the outlet is located at #01-34. It’s in a corner so it’s easy to miss but look out for the signboard and unit number and you should be able to find it.
