Hacksaw Ridge SG

When I saw my pal Samy’s post on Facebook that Hacksaw Ridge is the best movie this year, I knew that (1) I HAD to watch it even if I don’t really like watching movies about wars (YAWN) and (2) I’d better tell him (after watching the movie) that the year has only just begun. Hahaha! Turns out, he’s right! It’s a bloooooody good movie. I didn’t read any sort of synopsis before showing up at the cinema. In fact, I didn’t know what was going to happen in the movie. And it was amazing on so many levels.

For one, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I found out, at the end of the movie and just before the credits began rolling, that it’s based on a true story. Desmond Doss is not a movie character. The movie was based on his life. My goodness.

Two, the cinematography was AWESOME. The director, Mel Gibson, must be pure genius. The audience gets ‘transported’ to the battlefield and there are so many scenes that make us want to scream out loud in terror. Absolutely brilliant.

And I don’t want to say much more in case it spoils the movie experience for you, but make sure you watch this movie, even if you don’t watch any other movie this year!

I know what’s going to be seared into my memory… Those scenes in which Desmond Doss, his hands shaking and bleeding from the ropeburn, pleads with God to help him find one more wounded soldier. Those are scenes we won’t forget very soon. Like he said, he doesn’t hear voices in his head, it’s never a (two-way) “conversation” with God, and yet when he hears cries of “Medic! Help me!”, he knows that’s what God wanted him to do. What an extraordinary person, and what an extraordinary life!

We watched this movie with the 1-for-1 weekend promotion with SAFRA cards at Shaw cinemas. 🙂 Love, love, love this offer. I know you will too.
