Kin Kao Mai
I had a $10 Eatigo voucher to spend and my darling picked this Thai food option that’s at Punggol East, where the container park is. So we had a takeaway meal from Kin Kao Mai for dinner yesterday. I know, it doesn’t look as appetizing when it’s in the ‘dabao’ containers, and we really should have brought our own food containers (I forgot), but anyway this post is to record
our my thoughts about the meal and what we should order again next time, and what we’ll probably skip in future.
First up, my Glass Noodles with Prawn in Claypot ($16) meant for two was as tasty as I’d imagined it would be. Glass noodles are one of my favorite things to eat. I guess they tend to be flavorful as they soak up the sauces they’re cooked with, so each mouthful is a delight. There were six prawns, I think, and I suspect they’re of the frozen variety. Slightly dry (maybe overcooked?) and not succulent the way I like my prawns to be.
The Seafood Tom Yum ($13) was so-so. Really, the prawns do make a difference. If they are juicy, succulent and very fresh, the whole dish is a winner. I’d probably rate this a 5/10. Side note to my darling: just get your favorite green curry next time. I can live without tom yum. Really.
And my darling also ordered the deep-fried chicken wings with thai herbs ($9 for 7 pieces). He said it’s the Thai version of my favorite prawn paste chicken. Haha! Not even close. I thought it was absolutely brilliant that they use only the mid-joint portion of the chicken wings. HOWEVER, the chicken’s so dry. I thought you can never go wrong with fried chicken. Well, apparently, you can. So dry and tasteless. Are these frozen too? But the sweet chili sauce is what saves this dish.
As for the BBQ Pork Thai Style (minimum order of 2 pieces, $4), I thought it has a nice char, but that was it. It was not exceptionally tasty. But I like that they included, in the plastic box, some chopped-up onions and cucumber, like what we get with Indian rojak. I simply love onions.
I think we would be back again. Why? It seems like there’s no GST nor service charge. And they didn’t add on a separate charge for takeaway. Plus, there are 50% discount slots via Eatigo. And this meal actually cost us only $11, after deducting 50% plus my $10 discount voucher from Eatigo. I’m guessing it’s just really hard to get some fresh ingredients these days. At Fairprice, I’m paying MORE for frozen (then thawed) prawns now versus fresh prawns pre-COVID. *sigh* But we make do, ya? Don’t complain when you have food. Just do a review and move on. Or something like that.
