Dabao-ed dinner from The Straits People Cafe yesterday

It’s second time lucky for us at The Straits People. The last time I made an Eatigo reservation for The Straits People was, I think, on 26 December last year. And while the reservation went through on the app, I got a message from the cafe to say that they won’t be open, so we had to book someplace else. Yesterday, we finally managed to get through those doors and got our dinner with an Eatigo 50% discount slot. I love that they offer 50% discount at 6pm, when a lot of other places don’t as they know customers would come get food anyway.

I bought 4 mains even though we’d only eat 2 for dinner, as I wanted to keep the remaining 2 for lunch today so I won’t have to cook. Smart, right? 😀

I like the Mushroom Lasagne ($6.95 after discount) and Beef Meatballs N Mash ($4.95 after discount) the most:

Really good marinara sauce and meatballs. I want to order these again soon!

The Beef Burger ($6.95 after discount) turned, of course, soggy during the ride home. I’m sure it’s a lot better if consumed within the cafe. I’d probably ask for the pickles to be omitted if I’m ordering this again as I really don’t like pickles in my burgers and sandwiches. What I would like, though, is raw onions, tomatoes and lettuce.

The Creamy Tagliatelle ($6.95 after discount) was something my darling insisted on ordering. I’d thought anything creamy would get really jelak after a few bites so ordinarily, I’d not order this for sure. However, the only thing I’ll say about this dish is that it needs more seasoning as it was incredibly bland.

The Eatigo discount doesn’t apply to drinks and dessert. However, I do recommend getting their Dark Chocolate Fudge Cake ($4). It’s so compact that it feels like brownie more than a cake, but boy, is it chocolatey! It’s also a small slice of cake so you certainly will not over-indulge (though you’ll want to). On the menu, it is stated that this is a homemade gluten free chocolate cake covered in dark chocolate ganache and roasted almonds. I believe we had peanuts today (which aren’t my favorite). Actually I don’t like nuts in cakes or brownies. I’m OK with them in chocolate bars. So I simply scrapped them off this cake. XD

Just one bite… to get to Chocolate Heaven

For some reason unknown to me, the cafe even provided a free slice of their homemade bread pudding. THANKS! Y’all too sweet lah!

Also, I found their homemade vanilla pound cake looking way too tempting. Sitting there looking so moist and delectable. But as I’d ordered a slice of chocolate cake already, I decided to have this next time. 😀

I think The Straits People Cafe offers one very chill spot for brunch. The decor is homely and inviting. Unfortunately, during this CB period, we don’t get to dine-in. You can, however, take a seat while waiting for your food to be prepared.

I have a feeling Instagrammers might like this ‘brick wall’:

I’d sent over my order and Eatigo booking reference number via Whatsapp in the morning, and told the staff I’d be collecting my order at 6pm. I’d thought the food would be ready for me to just pick up, pay and go. However, there was still a wait of about 15 minutes. I’m not sure (because they didn’t tell me) if it’s due to the fact that I’d not paid up yet so they had to see me in person first before they’d prepare the order. So next time, I’m certainly going to pay upfront and let them prepare the food ahead of time with full assurance that I’m going to turn up. 😉

The Straits People Cafe is at 1 Pemimpin Drive. Here’s a tip for cyclists, riders, and other motorists: do not park at the main road outside the cafe. During the evening, especially after the rain (like yesterday’s), there are SO MANY mosquitoes. It’s quite scary actually. Make sure you ‘take cover’ within the cafe. And then run to your vehicle after.
