Iron Nori (9 Jln Wangi) Serves Excellent Mashed Potatoes :D

What did you have for dinner on National Day? 😀 For us, it was a regular work day, then we made our way to 9 Jln Wangi where Iron Nori is located. My darling had made a reservation via Eatigo for a 50% discount dining slot. Strangely enough, our booking was for 5pm but when we arrived, we were told that the kitchen would be open/ready only at 5.30pm. So we had some fruit beer while waiting. (@_@) Haha! I’d wanted to get water but this place doesn’t sell water by the cup (at other places it’d be 50 cents, right?) – here they do only sell water by the JUG, for a good $2.50! So we had a bottle of fruit beer for $9 because… Coca Cola costs a freaking 5 bucks (before service charge) here. -> Makes you feel like you’re ordering a Coke on a plane, ya? 😛

First up was their Signature Mashed Potatoes ($4.90, before 50% discount) which features russet potatoes, mushroom ragout (yum!) and chopped parsley (not that I noticed any)…

Mashed potato with mushroom ragout is DA BOMB, I tell you. So delicious! I can just have THIS and a cup of iced water and I’m done with dinner. Why do I even need to order anything else?! 😀 They were sweet enough to provide additional (tiny) bowls for sharing, but we didn’t use those. XD

Then we had the Signature Omu Rice Beef Stroganoff ($19.90 before discount).

The magic of this dish is in that scrambled egg. Truly magical. I do not usually order omu rice (only my darling does as it’s one of his favorite things to eat) but I’m in love with Iron Nori’s version of it. The only real letdown is the beef, which was overcooked, which is a sad waste of beef, really.

Then we had the Signature Crispy Soft Shell Crab Spaghetti ($22.90) which supposedly comes with “Singapore’s Chilli Crab Sauce”. Notice how everything we ordered is called “Signature” something or other? Yup, as it was our first visit, we tried to go with what the cafe thinks are their specialties. Unfortunately, sometimes this backfires…

I was initially taken aback by how ORANGE this dish looks. Chili crab is orange-colored? But the soft shell crab tastes yummy, so that’s fine. The issue here is the spaghetti and how weird it is. Chili crab pasta with CAPSICUM in it? Huh? And somehow this supposed chili crab sauce doesn’t seem very legit. I would not order this dish ever again. Also, it looks like the chef dumped the crab and the sauce on top, caused a bit of a splatter, and didn’t bother wiping it up. Maybe if they called this dish ‘The Donald’, it’d be able to pass.

And this is the fruit beer we had while waiting for the chefs to return to the kitchen for dinner service. There were 4 flavors to choose from – Mango, Peach, Blueberry and Cantaloupe – and we picked the yellow Mango one. There’s just 2.5% alcohol and 20% real fruit juice, no preservatives nor artificial coloring. And I think I read somewhere on the label that it might have come from China.

Even after the Eatigo 50% discount, the bill still came up to $36.14 which I’m not sure I’ll be willing to pay again. Ha! While we were there, we also noted that you can do takeaways with 50% off via Eatigo. Initially, one guy was told at the cashier’s that the discount will only be 40% since he’s not dining in. But after some discussion with the person I’m assuming is the supervisor or manager, the guy got his 50% discount, which was probably a relief for him since he ordered a lot of food for takeaway, as if he’s feeding 8 people or so.

I might just return to dabao the mashed potatoes. XD
