How would you cut 2 slices from this cake to ensure the rest of it remains moist when kept in the fridge?
I got a Mao Shan Wang Chocolate Fudge Cake from Cake Delivery Singapore today and it presented the perfect opportunity to put into practice something I learnt recently from a TV program! It’s a cake cutting hack that’s terribly useful when you have a large cake that you’re taking only a few slices from and have to store the rest of it in the fridge BUT you don’t want it to lose too much moisture and dry out. It’s a large 1.3kg cake that’s supposed to yield some 12 slices and my darling and I would only have 1 slice each today, so I had to cut 2 slices and try to keep the rest in tip-top shape. In the image above, you see 3 common ways people would cut 2 slices from a round cake. But which is the method I used? Hehe!
First, here’s the cake as it was delivered to me. It looks so yummy already:
And here’s a clue. In this picture below is one of the two slices I cut from the cake:
This Mao Shan Wang Chocolate Fudge Cake is a very dense chocolate cake that, interestingly, is very moist! The durian mousse layer in the middle is like ice cream – icy cold, still solid, and is a surprise layer within the cake.
So here’s how I cut the cake with my regular kitchen knife because (I think) CakeDelivery.sg forgot to send me a disposable plastic cake knife:

Two lines down the middle
Then a cut in the middle of the long strip. Then remove the two slices. Here’s what’s left:
And you push the remaining halves together, so the ‘inside’ of the cake is not exposed to the air:
And your next question might be: “What about the 3rd and the 4th slices? How do I cut those?” Well…
Do it this way:
Then push it together once again. Tah-dah! And none of the inside of the cake will be exposed to the air. This way, the cake may retain its moisture for a longer period.
I hope you have learnt something from this blogpost! I love learning new things, especially life hacks like this one. Do share my blogpost with your pals ‘cos everyone will have to cut a birthday cake at some point, or a Christmas logcake in a few months’ time.
And if you’re craving for some cake, you can pop by CakeDelivery.sg. But be warned, many of their cakes get SOLD OUT super fast! You literally have to stalk them!
