Growing Spring Onions In Water At Home

Last month, I discovered that the two onions I had sitting on a table at home had sprouted. Interesting how things grow in this house. Remember when I blogged about the mushroom kit which had mushrooms sprouting all of a sudden, without any help from me at all? 😀 Thankfully, I had two of these self-watering pots (that cost something like 99 cents only) which I’d bought off Shopee and they seemed to be the perfect size for these onions. At that time, there weren’t many visible roots yet so I figured having that wick would be a good idea. And of course, I posted about this on my Facebook page and some folks were quick to point out that there’s no soil and my “hydroponics” system for (spring) onions was unlikely to work.

But…

It worked… too well. Now I constantly include spring onions in my home-cooked meals ‘cos it’s growing like grass. LOL.

I would recommend you grow your own spring onions at home because (1) they’re low maintenance – just a bit of sun will do, plus some water, (2) they taste good – I’m harvesting some for the fish I’m gonna steam later this evening, and (3) buying a batch from the supermarkets always leads to wastage as no one ever needs so many spring onions for one meal. Only at wet markets can you ask the boss of the veggie stall to give you just a small amount for free. 😉
