Since we’re still unable to dine out in large(r) groups, my mom decided to order a “Petit Feast” from Violet Oon’s so we could enjoy good peranakan food in the comfort of our own home. And *ahem* they weren’t kidding about the ‘petit’ bit. I’m not sure why the menu states that this particular set “Serves 4-6 people”. After all… it only comes with 4 servings of jasmine rice. And we love eating prawns… but there were only THREE prawns with the dry laksa. Tsk tsk. Had a game of scissors-paper-stone with my sis to determine who’d get a prawn – she won. (@_@) While there were fewer hits than misses… I have to say that the Beef Rendang and the Dry Laksa are both absolutely delicious. So you may still want to go ahead and order this Petit Feast… Or only order the really good items.

First things first… the food was packed into styrofoam containers with plastic covers. And the containers were placed into paper carrier bags which are pretty but likely to get oil or gravy stains so you won’t be able to reuse them. Bummer. Actually it would be a good idea to provide insulated thermal bags so as to keep the food warm for a longer period of time. Sure, that will add to the cost but if you’re paying $135 already… I don’t think you’ll mind much if it’s revised to $145 or $150, right? Or perhaps there should just be an option for customers to select an insulated bag for their delivery and pay for the bag too.
The dishes which were quite forgettable:
- Tau Hu Goreng – meah
- Ayam Pong Tay – …
- Chap Chye – lots of bean curd skin but veggie portion is small
- Ikan Goreng Chilli – the rempah is awesome but the fish is amazingly dry and tough!

The highlights of the meal were definitely the Beef Rendang (oh-so-soft!) and Dry Laksa (absolutely scrumptious!) and that’s it.
I was surprised that there’s no dessert. Not even a few slices of agar agar, which would been such a sweet ending to this meal… instead of leaving us feeling like something’s missing. Oh right… $135’s missing. XD Hahaha! I’m joking. I’m joking! *I know… dessert’s not included in the menu… but if it’s included anyway, as a treat, the business would easily have gotten a few more loyal fans for life. (Just saying ;))
Head over to violetoon.com if you’d like to place an order for delivery or takeaway and want to check out the menu first. You’ll have to call them or send them an email to order.
