This post is the first in a new series on ‘Books For Kids Who Hate Reading’. 😀 My main motivation for starting this series is to encourage children AND their parents to read. I’ve borrowed a graphic novel from NLB recently and… OMG… is it good! Written by ‘#1 New York Times bestselling author’ Chris Colfer and illustrated by Jon Proctor, ‘Goldilocks: Wanted Dead or Alive’ is the missing piece in a beloved fairytale puzzle. Apart from Goldilocks, other characters in this graphic novel include Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Puss in Boots, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Gingerbread Man, Pinocchio, Little Miss Muffet, and more! What do all these storybook characters have in common? Well, this book makes everything crystal clear. And the storyline is intriguing too. Most importantly, how did Goldilocks end up becoming a fugitive on the run after visiting the three bears’ home? You’ll have to read this book to find out. 😉

Why I Think Kids Who Hate Reading Will Enjoy This Book

For one, it’s in full color (YAY!) and these fairytale characters are familiar ones but there’s an interesting plot twist.

There are all of 329 pages but believe me, reading this page-turner of a book is a breeze.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this myself.

And kids who hate reading books full of text (and no pictures), and who have been raised on a diet of Instagram / Youtube / TikTok, might just find this graphic novel one they can fully digest in a day or two.

Words And Phrases Kids Will Learn From This Book

Apart from being an interesting read, ‘Goldilocks: Wanted Dead or Alive’ will teach your kids new words and phrases they can use in compositions at school.

Here are some of them:

Undeniable, Sequester, Benefactor, Coalition, Diplomacy, Seclusion, Eccentric, Purge, Intriguing, Conscience, Delinquent, Conniving, Narcoleptic, Petitioned, Abomination, Circumstantial, Compelling, Salvage, Ambassador, Interject, Riveting, Deplorable, Elimination, Propaganda, Anonymous, Impeccable, Peril, Dilemma, Incompetent, Lucrative, Endeavor, Emasculated. (OK, maybe not the last one)

Grave consequences, Making an entrance, In a matter of minutes, Rambunctious behavior, Resisting arrest, Conspiracy theories, Take no prisoners, Live in constant fear, Inherited a fortune, Feel that fear coursing through your veins.

And there’s so much more.

Obviously, I highly recommend this book. You can borrow a physical or digital copy from NLB.
