If you don’t already know, Vitagen has a new product – ‘Vitagen Less Sugar Pineapple’. Is it a marketing gimmick or does this product actually have the potential to be one of Vitagen’s main offerings? After all, it IS sold as a standalone pack of 5 (priced at $3.20) instead of being bundled with Vitagen’s other well-loved flavours. Also, my darling got us takeaway yesterday from Fong Sheng Hao, a Taiwanese eatery at Serangoon NEX. I wrote about spotting the eatery in an earlier blogpost about Tamago-EN. Image may be NSFW.

So… is it any good? Does it help satisfy cravings, especially when we can’t travel to Taiwan as we did pre-COVID?

I wanted to try this product as I love eating fresh pineapple. I do especially like the sweet Sawarak Pineapples. And at some fruit juice stalls, my favourite beverage to order is a mixture of Pineapple and Soursop juice. So how does this Vitagen version taste?

For one, after peeling off the foil on top, I could smell the pineapple – it’s like the smell you get from pineapple candy or a can of pineapple juice. Freshly-cut pineapple generally doesn’t have any strong smell.

As for the taste, Vitagen wasn’t kidding about the “Less Sugar”. It doesn’t taste too sweet. Just a hint of sweetness, and when you drink this when it’s really cold, it’s generally alright. I asked my sister for her verdict and she said “Not bad”. But when I asked if she thinks it’s better than the other Vitagen flavours, it was an outright NO. Image may be NSFW.

Hahaha! I have to agree.

Always fun to read the ingredients list. For all the fructose, glucose and pineapple juice concentrate that this product contains, I’m pleased to note how it’s not too sweet.

And if you noticed the “bubble tea” in the very first picture above… yup! I have been preparing my own bubble tea at home. I have the white pearls which are like GongCha’s. And I will usually add Yakult to Pokka’s Green Tea or Oolong Tea. Image may be NSFW.

As for our takeaway meal from Fong Sheng Hao… well, let me just say that I was let down by the Braised Pork Rice. I’d passed the bowl of Taiwan Popcorn Chicken Rice ($9.80) to my darling as I’ve never had a high opinion of popcorn chicken. I took the Braised Pork Rice which also had an add-on of a hashbrown (with a cup of coffee, the 3 items cost $11.10).

The braised pork rice was disappointing. It was neither savory nor oily and satisfying like the braised pork rice in Taiwan. No fatty pieces of pork which will make you worry about your cardiovascular health.

The hashbrown was also… meah. But it was a takeaway meal. SO you might want to try their food hot… in store… for your own verdict.

What surprised me, though, was how yummy the popcorn chicken was. Also, that pickle they use (which I think is made with Japanese cucumber) is so addictive. <- Really helps whet the appetite!

OK… so my (recent) curiosity has been satisfied. I think I’ll stick to the familiar stuff today. XD
