After being disappointed one time when I was unable to get the pineapple tarts I wanted for Chinese New Year, now I make it a point to pre-order all the pineapple tarts I would like to eat. Muahaha! XD So, as you can see in the picture above, I’m enjoying tarts from 3 businesses this year: D’Pastry, Elsie’s Kitchen and Rumah Baba Fred. For two of them, I’d even submitted my order before Christmas last year! 😀 For D’Pastry, my order was submitted on 22 December 2021 and for Rumah Baba Fred, even earlier, on 17th December! As for Elsie’s Kitchen, my darling bought the tarts right off a Facebook Live session recently, and for $15, those pineapple pillows are really worth the pricetag. I’d dare say that these 3 are definitely among Singapore’s best pineapple tarts this year!

Elsie’s Kitchen: Signature Handmade Pineapple Tarts

My darling got these at $15 per bottle though it is stated on their website that the price is (usually) $37.45 with GST included.

Review: It’s my first time trying pineapple tarts from Elsie’s Kitchen – thought they only did catering. Each pineapple ‘pillow’ looks like a brownish nugget. I didn’t have high hopes for them based on the looks alone as they seemed dry and unappetizing. HOWEVER, these feel pretty soft and strangely, chewy like you’re eating a soft nougat. They are not too sweet, just a little tart, and I don’t know if it’s just me but there’s some hint of a spice – like cloves or something. I couldn’t find an ingredients list on their website so… who knows? Emailed them but haven’t got a reply yet. *I think many people will love this bottle because it can be cleaned and used to store pasta or cornflakes, etc. Looks so pretty. Totally worth buying!

D’Pastry Pineapple Tarts (Opened)

Previously I’d bought the pineapple balls and then read someone’s review that the open-faced pineapple tarts are even better. So I got the latter this year! 😀

Review: Buttery and melt-in-the-mouth! Yup, you probably don’t need teeth to eat these. 😀 The beautiful blob of pineapple jam on top is also not too sweet. Whether it’s the sticker on the tub or the print on their paper bags, you’ll be reminded of how D’Pastry was featured in The Sunday Times 2015 for producing “Singapore’s TOP 3 Pineapple Tarts”. Actually, I think they should be among the top 3 in 2022 also lah.

You can still get these off Shopee, I think, for $35 instead of the $29 I paid.

Rumah Baba Fred’s Kueh Tair (pineapple tarts)

Saw these on Facebook and wanted to try this Peranakan version of pineapple tarts. The tarts are bigger than usual, and have the criss cross lattice on top.

Review: The base is like a biscuit (see cross-section pic above) and firmer than the D’Pastry ones. These tarts feel homemade, with nothing industrial about them. I could possibly place them on a plate and serve them to elderly relatives who might end up thinking I made these myself! Hahaha! The tarts are big so after eating one or two pieces, you might feel satisfied already. With other brands, you just want to eat one after another. These look like they might taste very sweet but they aren’t!

My darling was shocked at the pricetag ($52.50, self-collection) but I told him it’s a “once a year thing” so it’s OK lah.

This year, all 3 brands seem to have gotten the sweetness level down pat. They are also all yummy in their own way. Assuming all 3 are priced the same, I’ll pick D’Pastry’s for gifting just about anyone as the tarts are all uniform, pretty and taste good. For impressing older relatives, I’ll get Baba Fred’s because the tarts are big and look homemade. So if no one asks, you don’t have to say anything. Pretend you made them yourself. LOL! For people who are into upcycling and reusing stuff, and not wanting to let anything go to waste, I’ll gift them Elsie’s Kitchen Pineapple Tarts as the bottle is the prettiest of the lot.

~ How Many Calories in One Pineapple Tart? ~

Even if, like me, you’re not concerned about the price of pineapple tarts, you might be worried about the number of calories they contain…

According to this CNA article, “A pineapple tart contains 93 calories, 2.3g of saturated fat, 6.2g of sugar and 58mg of sodium. Chances are, you will not stop at one, so be mindful when consuming these yummy morsels. Pop two pieces into your mouth and you will have to do 25 minutes’ of vigorous jumping jacks, or clean the house for more than an hour to get rid of the excess calories.

Sh*t! Two pineapple tarts => More than 1 hour of housework!

I know I’ll definitely have to exercise a lot more to burn off all these extra calories!
