Lucky Chicken Rice @ Lucky Plaza: Avoid Lunch Hours

Had lunch at Lucky Plaza today and dined at Lucky Chicken Rice (Fast Food Restaurant). Picked this place after I’d spotted a foodie instagrammer’s recommendation. Did. Not. Know. What. To. Expect. Though! We’d (unfortunately) come by when they were at their busiest – 12.30pm. We were ushered to a table for two, next to an angmoh dude who was dining alone. Asked for a menu, but apparently there’s none! If you’re expecting laminated menu sheets for you to look at, well, you’ll be disappointed. It seems like (they think) they are so famous, everyone should know what they sell and how much each item costs already. I spotted two sheets of paper with minuscule font on the walls, which had to be the… erm, menu for this place. So my darling went over to one of them and snapped a picture… And then I took a photo of what he’d taken…

Lucky Chicken Rice prides itself on being a “Fast Food Restaurant” so expect the kind of service you get in a Hong Kong eatery, where you’re (sometimes) treated like dirt, expected to make up your mind quickly, and try not to bother the staff with unnecessary requests. In fact, after my darling had asked for a menu (and was told there isn’t 1) and he’d gone to snap a picture of what’s on the wall, the (supposedly) oldest wait staff said loudly enough for me to hear as she’d walked away that he was so “ma fan” (a.k.a troublesome). Well, it’s our first visit. How would we know that we must be clear about what to order before even stepping into this place? Haiyah.

Did not want to ruin his appetite by telling him then and there.

So when he asked if I’d like to add on a dish of bean sprouts or a bowl of dumpling soup, I’m like nope nope nope. I just wanted to eat as quickly as possible, and get the hell outta there. XD

I ordered the Boneless Roast Chicken Drumstick Rice ($6.50) while he had the $10 Chicken Rice Set which came with slightly more chicken and a small dish of xiaobaicai. Both of us were given small bowls of soup.

To sum up, here are the pros and cons of dining at Lucky Chicken Rice:

Pros: Food is served FAST as everything’s already prepped at the side – you order and it’s immediately served to you. The rice is tasty, the chili sauce is on point and the steamed chicken is delicious.

Cons: Staff may make snide remarks that you may or may not hear, there’s a rushed atmosphere during lunchtime (just like in HK), prices may be different when you visit since you’re not offered a menu upfront, and you *might* have to queue.

Conclusion: Don’t come by during lunch. I would suppose they are much friendlier during offpeak hours. 😀

*Interestingly, halfway through our meal, the snarky wait staff’s attitude did an about-turn. She acknowledged that it was our first time visiting them, and welcomed us to return. Erm… I don’t know what to say.
