Boom Steak @ Centrepoint: Eat-In Cos Takeout Isn’t Such A Good Idea

Last week, I went to Centrepoint to redeem a Fave voucher he’d bought. It was for combo sets at Boom Steak located at the basement. I didn’t really know what to expect as I didn’t know such a business existed. The food platter is placed on top of a giant paper cup (like one of those ultra-large cups for Big Gulp at 7-eleven stores). Is it practical? I guess so. If my food is covering the cup, it means flies can’t get into my drink, like they sometimes do. And it’s unlikely that friends dining with me would accidentally drink from my cup, like they sometimes do too. Other than that, I have no idea why my food needs to be above my cup. But I guess this would be awesome in cinemas – popcorn or nachos on top, drink below. You’ll never need to place the tub of popcorn on your lap again when there’s a cup holder by your seat. 🙂

We tried their Chicken Steak and Korean BBQ Pork Belly combos. When the female boss was preparing the steak and pork belly, it smelled delicious within the shop. I really should have eaten my share there. Haha! But since he and I had arranged to dine at home, I took the food home from Somerset to Punggol via MRT. (*And the lady boss is Korean. She says she’s lived here for almost 1.5 years and this business is about 2 months old.)

Strangely enough, there are no lids for the packaging. There are cup holders at the bottom of the paper bag (so the cups don’t topple over) but no lids for what’s on top. She placed a thin piece of brown paper over the food, and that was it. I could still see the broccoli and wedges peeking out from the side. And the smell was OH… MY… GOSH. I’m sure many people felt hungry being on the same train as me.

Apparently, FoodPanda delivers for them too. In this manner?

By the time I got home, the food was cold… obviously. And the kimchi seemed to have dried out a little. Taste-wise, it was alright. But I’m sure it would have tasted 10 times better if it didn’t have to survive the long train ride home with me. 😦

If you’re one hungry male, this combo is unlikely to make you feel full. But ladies on a diet will appreciate the design. It looks huge ‘cos the cup is huge. So visually, it seems like you’re eating a big meal. But if you were to look at the components separately, well, first there’s barely half a cup of the drink you ordered (and it’s really healthy, i.e. not very sweet at all), and the food’s in that little compartment above – so you don’t get much rice either. If I’m working in the area, I might visit Boom Steak pretty often. There are no seats within the eatery, so stand at one of the tables provided, or just eat on the go, because, well, it’s already designed that way for you.
