chef chik review

Most of the popular food blogs are unanimous in their opinion that Chef Chik offers ‘Restaurant Quality Hawker Food’ but I think it feels more like homely fare instead. There’s nothing pretentious about the food served up here and the soups legit taste like something my mom would prepare… out of love. And I suppose that’s the only reason the hawkers would brave the extreme heat to pamper us with their delicious steamed items… that are so reasonably priced! The husband-and-wife team have flushed faces due to the temperatures… and I felt sorry that they had to wear face masks when they were obviously already feeling so hot. I was sweating buckets just sipping on the hot soups so I really don’t know how they tolerate the heat. I guess that’s why opening hours are short: from 11.30am to 3.30pm only. And the stall is closed on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.

Ordinarily, I’d never go chasing Michelin-starred stalls and those which have gotten rave reviews… but my darling loves exploring new food places. Going back to the same old place gives him that “filled with dread” feeling. LOL. So… thanks to him, I get out of my comfort zone and try something new all the time…

chef chik buzzer
You know a hawker stall is popular when they require buzzers to prevent customers crowding around the stall while waiting for their orders to be prepared.
chef chik menu
Soups from $4.50 to $8! For the quality… these are really underpriced.
chef chik black fungus steamed chicken
$12 Black Fungus Steamed Chicken. Delicious and not too salty (so you won’t eat a lot of rice). The black fungus was cooked to perfection. And those tender pieces of chicken… YUM!
chef chik oyster sauce veg
$4 Oyster Sauce Veg. I’d probably pay something like $8/$10/$12 at zichar stalls. So this is decent.
chef chik soups

The soups are absolutely brilliant. They don’t give you a raging thirst after, yet are so flavorful. As we were seated right in front of the stall, the lady boss even spoke to us during a lull period. She said that we should give the soup a good stir as the sweet stuff has gone to the bottom. I did so… but also felt that with a stir or not, the soup’s yummy! 🙂

Chef Chik’s stall is definitely worth a special visit. Drop by early. Bring your own handheld fan if you need one. And if you like the food, you certainly can chat with the hawkers during the lull periods. They’re friendly and not at all obnoxious though their business is so good. I spotted a lady who came back to say she (and her pals) couldn’t finish the food and wanted to take the remainder home. The lady boss immediately handed her two plastic bowls and lids and a plastic bag… at no charge! Ok lah… I guess this is where it’s really like dining in restaurants – you can ask for your food to be put into takeaway containers and people don’t bat an eyelid. XD

Chef Chik is located at #01-36, Haig Road Market and Food Centre. They’re CLOSED on SUN+MON+TUES!
